MAJOR CAUSES OF DENTAL CAVITIES IN CHILDREN

Dental cavities are the most common dental issues seen in children and toddlers alike. These are some major causes of cavities in children:

  • PLAQUES: A plaque is a sticky substance on the teeth that houses and grows bacteria. It’s a sticky substance that coats the teeth and is best removed when it’s still soft. It becomes more difficult to remove when it hardens. Dental plaques are also a major cause of tooth decay.
  • LACK OF GOOD DENTAL HYGIENE: This can show up as the lack of or inconsistent brushing of teeth, flossing, etc. Periodic visits to the dentist also serve as good dental hygiene.
  • POOR DIET: Cavities can be formed by the type of diet your children are placed on. The kind of food that enters their mouth is enough to either make or mar the early stage of your dental health. Children whose sweet teeth are regularly indulged have more tendencies to experience cavities. These can be sweets, chocolate, candies, etc. Even foods that are high in carbohydrates and starch can also cause dental cavities in children.
  • RECEDING GUMS: This can cause dental cavities due to the exposure of a tooth’s root

HOW TO PREVENT CAVITIES IN CHILDREN

It’s much easier and better for everyone to be safe than sorry when it comes to dental cavities. This can be prevented by:

  • Flossing at least once a day
  • Brushing the teeth twice a day
  • Teaching children how to maintain good oral hygiene
  • Put them on a healthier diet
  • Satisfy their sweet tooth cravings with healthier alternatives. Eg; yogurt, granola bars, dried fruits, etc
  • Using fluoride toothpaste
  • Regular dental check-ups

CAN CAVITIES IN CHILDREN BE TREATED?

Yes, of course. They can either be managed or treated by a dentist. The treatment of dental cavities depends on the severity of the decay. How can dental cavities be treated?  Let’s see

  • FILLINGS: This treatment is more common for toddlers and children who have one or more cavities. This can take place on permanent teeth, as well as on baby teeth. Dentists drill out the decayed material from the hole formed in the teeth and fill the hole. Dental fillings are made of silver amalgam or gold or composite resin.
  • FLUORIDE: This treatment is only possible when the decay is spotted early. In cases like this, children just need prescription toothpaste and mouthwash, as well as fluoride treatments. All of which can be gotten from either the dental clinic. Or recommended by a dentist.
  • EXTRACTION: This is necessary when the tooth or teeth decay is too bad. The baby tooth from the affected area will be removed. And the gap will be kept open with a space maintainer, which helps permanent teeth grow properly.
